Animals and Injury
When most of us think of injury and animals’ dog bites are the first thing that springs to mind. Dogs are certainly not the only animals that can cause injury though. Let us look at some of the other creatures that can, and do, cause injury.
Cats
Some cats will bite and scratch, particularly strangers. While cat bits and scratches may not seem as dangerous as being attacked by a dog they can be quite troublesome. A puncture wound from a cat can easily infect or abscess. Cat scratch disease is another possibility too. If you get attacked by a cat seek medical attention as the cat may not be vaccinated. Don’t assume that all cats are friendly.
Horses
Horses are large creatures and each has their own temperament. If you are around horses ask the owner before approaching them. Horses can sometimes take special handling. Never ride a horse that is beyond your own riding skill. Head and back injuries along with broken bones are common horse injuries from falling. Horses can also bite and kick. If you are a motorist take extra care when passing a horse in case it gets spooked. Both horse rider and vehicle driver have a responsibility when a horse is on the road.
Birds
It doesn’t happen often but birds can also sometimes attack humans. Cockatiels, cockatoos and all exotic parrots can give a very nasty bite. Roosters can also attack humans and will sometimes do so if you get between them and their hens or chickens. Roosters have very sharp spurs on the back of their legs which can cause major lacerations or even take out an eye.
