Nursing home Neglect and Abuse
The decision to place a loved family member in a nursing home is often one of the hardest we have to make. Once the decision is made, choosing a good nursing home is something we all hope we can do. Proximity, price and level of care all play their part in the decision making process. One of the more frightening and anger inducing facts of life though is when things go wrong. Making sure you find a good home is the first step. Understanding and recognizing if something is amiss then doing something about it can sometimes be necessary.
The majority of nursing homes provide an excellent level of care. To get the best for you loved one there are things to look for and questions you can ask of residents before you commit to leaving your loved elderly there.
- Do the residents look happy and willing to talk?
- Is the staff willing for you to talk with the residents?
- Are activities planned on a regular basis?
- If your elderly person has any particular problems is the staff equipped to deal with them? Dealing with patients suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease takes some skilled work at times.
Once you have decided on a nursing home it is important to visit as often as you can and to communicate with staff to keep track of how your loved one is getting on.
